County of Franklin issued the following announcement on Feb. 6.

Franklin County Amateur Radio Club members deployed radio equipment and antennas at the Franklin County Emergency Operations Center to join the Winter Field Day contest, a coordinated event designed for the purpose of allowing amateur radio operators in the US and Canada to practice sending critical messages to each other.

This capability is critical when normal means of communication are disrupted.

“An established relationship with emergency management and a capable amateur radio club is critical to ensure a quick response plan is in place in the event of an emergency or natural disaster,” said John Deacon, President of the Franklin County Amateur Radio Club.

The contest was conducted on January 28, 2023.

“We are happy to have this partnership with the Franklin County Amateur Radio Club, it is always amazing to see them in action,” said Nicholas Thorpe, Director for Franklin County Emergency Management.
