County of Granville issued the following announcement on Jan. 16.

The Granville County Human Relations Commission hosted a great event at Oxford Baptist Church on January 16 honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Albert Capps (known by most as Coach Capps) received the HRC’s Blackwell Award that is awarded to one person each year honoring their service to Granville County.

Dr. Dena Moten offered inspiring words to attendees as the event’s keynote speaker.

The essay contest winners were as follows:

High School

#1 – Mark Panganiban – Granville Early College

#2 – Tayla Thomas – Granville Early College

#3 – Jayelenn Winston – Granville Central High

Honorable Mention – Nicholas Harris – J.F. Webb High 

Winners – Middle School

#1 – Melody Crawford – Northern Granville Middle

#2 – Parker Dunkin – Northern Granville Middle

#3 – David Davis – Butner-Stem Middle

Honorable Mention – Micheala Chrisenhall – Butner-Stem Middle
