County of Caswell issued the following announcement on Feb. 22.
General Statement of Duties
Performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of the building and grounds maintenance programs of the county.
Distinguishing Feature of the Class
An employee in this class is responsible for the maintenance of county buildings plumbing, electrical and heating systems, and the exterior maintenance and upkeep of buildings and grounds. Work includes applying trade skills to a variety of maintenance and repair problems. Work may include driving a truck or tractor and may require more than usual physical strength and endurance. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor who reviews work through periodic conferences, on-site inspections and effectiveness of maintenance programs.
Primary Duties
· Determines whether repairs can be made to equipment or whether replacement is necessary;
· Mows grass; rakes leaves; removes trash, brush and other debris from grounds;
· Performs related duties as required;
· When needed performs custodial duties, when short staffed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Thorough knowledge of the tools, equipment and materials used in the more common building and mechanical trades;
· Considerable knowledge of the methods, processed, tools, equipment and materials used in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of water, electrical, and heating and air conditioning systems;
· Skill in analyzing and resolving mechanical or operational problems;
· Skill in performing repairs on equipment and facilities;
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, other county employees and general public.
Physical Requirements
Work in this class is generally described as very heavy work. An employee must be able to physically perform the life support functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, and pulling, lifting, feeling, and performing repetitive motions. Employees must also possess the visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned. Employees are subject to a variety of environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold for prolonged periods. Conduct of regular responsibilities could involve occupational exposure to blood. The worker is subject to a variety of physical hazards such as working in high places and exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes, and mechanical moving parts.
Minimum Experience and Training
Graduation from an accredited high school (or equivalent); 1 – 2 years’ experience in buildings and grounds maintenance work or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Special Requirements
Must possess a valid state driver’s license
Must be 18 years of age
