County of Franklin issued the following announcement on Aug. 15.
Franklin County’s Board of Commissioners moved through its agenda quickly on Monday night, approving a few items and getting updates on projects.
During the comment portion of the meeting, Franklin County Manager Kim Denton updated the board on the great things happening at Triangle North Executive Airport.
“The airfield pavement rehabilitation project — an $11.9 million dollar project utilizing a combination of federal and state grants with a local match of $419,373 — celebrated an important milestone,” Denton said. “Earlier this month, the full repaving of the airport’s runway was completed.”
An apron expansion and taxiway improvements are also set to be made soon.
“This important project will bring Triangle North Executive Airport much-needed improvements while also making the airport compliant with FAA standards,” Denton said.
Denton also updated commissioners about three new hangar leases which will increase the economic impact of the airport.
Fire safety was also on Monday’s agenda.
Franklin County Fire Marshal Trey Evans presented a change to the Franklin County Code of Ordinances related to fire regulations. One of the changes would have Evans conduct fire inspections instead of another department.
“In the past, fire inspections have been a part of the Planning and Inspections Department,” Doerfer, who presented with Evans, said.
Most of the current code was based on the duties of the Fire Marshal being split between that department and the Emergency Management Director. Now, with a full-time Fire Marshal in Evans, the county is ready for him to take on more responsibility as Franklin County grows.
Evans said the changes remove outdated portions of ordinances and create a section that lays out the duties of his job. The ordinance also creates penalties for violations, although Evans said he has a different strategy in mind.
“I am more about educating,” Evans told commissioners.
Taking the time to talk with violators about the ordinance is a way Evans sees making the county safer. Commissioners received the ordinance on first reading. North Carolina General Statutes require the ordinance to be read twice before enacting.
Commissioners heard about the progress being made on the Public Safety Radio System from Ken Steere of Williams Communications. Steere reported that the project was on schedule and they had made significant progress on acquiring sites for the radio towers.
Franklin County Assistant County Manager Will Doerfer gave an update on the National Opioid Settlement funds. Doerfer said that a public meeting would be held soon to discuss how the money will be used. Franklin County is set to receive more than $3 million over the next 18 years. Read more about that here:
Commissioners also approved rezoning property from Neighborhood Business to General Business in the Youngsville area.
