Cattle farmers, agricultural students and interested individuals took part in the 5-County Beef Tour hosted by Franklin County’s Cooperative Extension program. The tour – which began at Cooperative Extension’s office and then traveled by police escort to various farms in the county.
During the first part of the tour, Dr. Phil Goodson – former hospital surgeon and owner of Springfield Angus -- welcomed the group in the farm’s auction venue. Goodson delved into embryo and genetics topics and how his farm manages cattle.
Next up, the tour traveled to Perry Farm where Marty Perry further discussed genetics. Additionally, other speakers talked about cost-share programs and how to use fly control tactics in cow pastures.
The tour then progressed to the family land of Franklin County Cooperative Extension’s Martha Mobley where she talked about forage test plots. While on the property, the group was able to examine the test plots and learn about Franklin County’s Soil & Water Conservation Seeder lease program.
Finally, the tour made its final stop at First Fruits Farm where owner and former NFL athlete Jason Brown provided a trolley tour of his farm before ending at Amazing Graze Barn for lunch.
While tour participants enjoyed a ribeye steak sandwich, guest speakers were presenting on topics like marketing and forage targeting.
